USB Device not detect/automount on Ubuntu

I had a problem of mounting my USB SD card reader. When i insert my USB card reader, nothing happened. After doing some Google discovery, finally i got my card reader work! Perhaps u should try if u had the same problem like me.

1. First, open the terminal. Then type the following code :

dmesg | tail

this is an example of my output

[ 822.864000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
[ 822.864000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
[ 822.864000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
[ 822.868000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] 3970048 512-byte hardware sectors (2033 MB)
[ 822.868000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
[ 822.868000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 03 00 00 00
[ 822.868000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
[ 822.868000] sdb: sdb1 **
[ 822.872000] sd 4:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
[ 822.872000] sd 4:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg1 type 0

** REMIND THE BOLD

2. Then type in the following code :

sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /home/yourusername/Public

Note 2.1 : Replace yourusername with your actual user name)
i.e :
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /home/yogatta/Public

Note 2.2 : my output is sdb1, so if your output is sda1, type in sda1

This is the simplest way to mount your disk. Be aware that you won't be able to write to this disk unless you are operating with root permissions. You can start an instance of nautilus from the command line operating with root permissions by:

sudo nautilus

In that instance of nautilus, you'll be able to write to this directory.

3. So, to open your mounted drive, when you open the nautilus, go to file system > home > yourusername > Public

You should see your mounted drive there.

When done, to unmount the device (for safe removal) you can do:

sudo umount /home/yourusername/Public

This will let you at least get access to your devices again.

Hide Partition Icon on Ubuntu Desktop

Fresh installation from Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Cd shows icons for all partitions on your desktop. As for me, i would like to see my desktop clean and free from icons. Changing a value in the GNOME Configuration Editor will stop partitions from being displayed on your desktop.

Press Alt + F2 to bring up the Run Application dialog. Type gconf-editor and click Run.

In the left pane of the window, browse to apps > nautilus > desktop.

Uncheck the volumes_visible option and the partitions on your desktop will disappear.

If you want to keep shortcuts to some partitions but not others, just do the following directions, and then you can create your own launchers for the partitions you want.

1. Right click on the desktop and click Create Launcher.

2. In the Type drop down box, select location.

3. Give the launcher a name and the location you want to link to. You can find the hard drive icon in usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/devices/ if you want to use it. The resulting launcher will act just like the ones that you removed earlier in this post.

Installing Compiz on Ati card

ATI cards require an extra program called XGL in order to be able to run Compiz. If you want some reviews about XGL, you can click this link or this link. In order to run XGL,open the terminal, and copy paste this code:

sudo apt-get install xserver-xgl

Then a pop-up notification will appear.

You have to reboot for this to take effect!

If anything messes you can delete that

xserver-XGL

from Synaptic anytime you want.
But nothing bad will happen, don't afraid : )

Top Antivirus Reviews

On my doing browsing Google searching the best antivirus, I found a review. ConsumerSearch give the best review about what and which antivirus is the best. I tried so many antivirus before and made decision on the best antivirus myself based on the review. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7 should best suit my PC without any trouble until now. Below is the synopsis i got from the review.

Best antivirus software overall.
On balance, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 is the best all-around antivirus program. It excels at its primary task of preventing viruses. Reviews agree that Kaspersky is better than bestsellers Norton AntiVirus 2007 and McAfee VirusScan Plus 2007 in all aspects. Kaspersky is fast and light; it won't slow your computer as much as the bestsellers. Although we still found some complaints about Kaspersky conflicting with some other software, program users express a much higher level of satisfaction than with Norton or McAfee.

Best antivirus software for experts.
Reviews unanimously agree that NOD32 is as good as or better than Kaspersky Anti-Virus in all but one area: Reviews say NOD32 has a very hard-to-use interface. Although computer experts say NOD32 offers great protection, no system drain and no software conflicts, most users will be confused by its unintuitive and confusing interface and controls. That puts NOD32 out of contention for anyone but sophisticated computer users.

Low-conflict antivirus software.
Many antivirus programs conflict with other security programs and software. Although no review rates Trend Micro Antivirus above others as a whole, it gets the best scores for low conflicts. The Kaspersky and NOD32 programs provide a better combination of protection and low use of system resources, but Trend Micro Antivirus is a viable alternative if you're having a lot of trouble with software conflicts.

Free antivirus software.
AOL now offers free security software to anyone with an e-mail address, whether or not they are AOL members. Active Virus Shield is actually a stripped-down version of the top-rated Kaspersky antivirus engine. While you'll get the same virus protection, the catch is that you have to agree to accept occasional marketing e-mails from AOL and its partners (you can opt out after the first e-mail). You get far less user control than with a paid program, but if you don't mind the marketing e-mails, Active Virus Shield is an easy-to-use, effective alternative.

Best security suite.
Security suites bundle antivirus and anti-spyware software, a firewall and other components into a single program. ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite emerges as a clear favorite in reviews. A common complaint among owners is that ZoneAlarm causes an above-average number of software conflicts. The antivirus component in the latest version is licensed from Kaspersky Anti-Virus. ZoneAlarm isn't yet Vista-compatible (but it may be by the time you read this).

Most popular antivirus software.
Norton continues to be the bestselling antivirus program, and reviews say it's excellent at detecting viruses. However, users complain that Norton AntiVirus can slow your computer to a crawl, and that Norton conflicts with other software. Although reviewers say the 2007 version is improved, we still read many complaints about installation problems and crashes. No credible source ranks Norton AntiVirus as one of the top programs this year.

How to Send File In Proxy Limited Network/ IM File Transfer Blocked

One of the basic credit of Instant Messaging is file transfer. Instant Messaging would be very useful when we need to send documents to our friends, clients, or anybody. When using IM in a limited internet access that only allow web surfing, and even streaming website also prohibited, file transfer would be impossible. This usually happens when we use internet at school, college or at work where there has proxy in their network.

Today I found a way to send files using P2P file sharing via web browser.
PipeBytes is a private P2P file sharing service that works directly via your browser. Exchange files of any size with anyone you want.

How does it work ?

  • 1. Start uploading a file and you will be prompted with a pick up code.
  • 2. Forward pick up code to file recipient.
  • 3. Once recipient enters the code the transfer will start.

Feature Overview

  • Unlimited File Size: Send files of any size.
  • No installations or downloads, all you need is a web browser.
  • Works with all popular browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera, Safari).
  • Note: Both sender and receiver should be online.
  • Coming Soon: Option to resume interrupted transfers.
  • Got Questions ? See PipeBytes FAQ page

Online Check System Before Running a Game

Gaming is going through a major revolution and the graphics keep getting better with every new game that is released. Unless you have a top of the line computer some of these games will not run on your computer. Today i found a website called System Requirements Lab.

System Requirements Lab uses an online script to check your computer to see if it meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of a game. Just choose a game and with a single hit ,“Can you run it?” button, it will scan your system. It may take some time. Just wait for it to finish.

In my opinion, checking your system compatibility is very important. First, if you obsessed of a game, and might need a powerful graphic card, you can choose which graphic card you have to buy that suits the game. You can save money by not buying unnecessary and expensive graphic card. Second, you can save money by not buying cd/dvd game that unfortunately not compatible with your computer. Hence, do a system check now!
