virus that converts .doc to .exe

The virus is called Kspool. It converts word documents (.doc) to executable program (.exe). Sometimes, it hid all the .doc file and we almost thought it was deleted.

Here's a simple solution to this problem.

1. Run the command prompt. (go to run > type in cmd)

2. Copy and paste this script. But before that, you should make a change in the drive letter. For the code below, the drive i want to heal is drive F. Thus, if your disk is drive C, then make it change. It also works on thumb drive.

3. Press Enter. Done!

PCI Express (PCIe) is a new I/O bus technology that, over time, will replace Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI), PCI-X, and Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP). By providing advanced features and increased bandwidth, PCIe addresses many of the shortcomings of PCI, PCI-X, and AGP. PCIe retains full software compatibility with PCI Local Bus Specification 2.3, and it replaces the parallel multidrop bus architecture of PCI and PCI-X with a serial, point-to-point connection bus architecture.

Two PCIe devices are connected by a link, and each link is made up of one or more lanes. Each lane consists of two low-voltage, differential signal pairs carrying 2.5 Gbps of traffic in opposite directions. One pair is used for transmitting, and the other pair is used for receiving. To further increase the bandwidth of a link, multiple lanes can be placed in parallel (x1, x2, x4, x8, x12, x16, or x32 lanes) between two PCIe devices to aggregate the bandwidth of each individual lane. In the future, the signaling rate of the link can be increased to provide even more bandwidth.

PCIe hardware is backwards compatible with PCI software on the Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows XP operating systems. The PCI features supported by current Windows operating systems will continue to work with PCIe without any need for modifications in the applications, drivers, or operating system; however, the advanced PCIe features will be natively supported only in Windows Vista and later versions of Windows.

•XPDM: The Windows XP Display Driver Model.

•WDDM: The Windows Vista Display Driver Model. WDDM is a significant evolution of the graphics driver infrastructure and will not be backwards compatible with XPDM drivers.

•GART: Graphics address relocation table, hardware that presents the display adapter with a linearized view of nonlinear memory.

•DCT: Display compatibility tests. Video drivers need to pass these tests in order to qualify for the "Designed for Windows" logo and to be digitally signed by Microsoft.

PCI Express Graphics

It is well known that graphics can always use more bandwidth than what is available. Graphics data transfers cause maximum traffic on the PCI bus. The continual increase in graphics demand and complexity eventually made the PCI bus insufficient, which led to the invention of AGP. Now we are pushing the limits of what AGP can deliver, and we need a better solution. PCIe surpasses AGP in bandwidth availability, with more room for expansion in the near future. By increasing the number of lanes in a link, graphics adapters can take advantage of increased bandwidth and faster data transfer. Graphics adapters will be using the X16 link, which will provide a bandwidth of 4 Gbps in each direction.

Given the higher bandwidth offered by PCIe, systems are already moving away from AGP to PCIe. There will not be many systems that provide both AGP and PCIe connectors. The first X16 graphics adapters and PCIe systems should be available in summer 2004.
PCI Express Graphics in Vista

The Windows Vista Display Driver Model (WDDM) will have specific requirements for PCIe graphics adapters. It will require that the 64-bit addressing mode be supported by the GPU. However, a minimum of 40 bits of physical address bits must be implemented. The unimplemented bits should be forced to zero. These requirements are not applicable to the Windows XP display driver model.

PCIe Graphics & AGP

In addition to the bandwidth considerations mentioned above, there are several other differences between AGP and PCIe.

By definition, AGP requires a chipset with a graphics address relocation table (GART), which provides a linear view of nonlinear system memory to the graphics device. PCIe, however, requires that the memory linearization hardware exist on the graphics device itself instead of on the chipset. Consequently, driver support for memory linearization in PCIe must exist in the video driver, instead of as an AGP-style separate GART miniport driver. Graphics hardware vendors who want to use nonlocal video memory in their Windows XP driver model (XPDM) drivers must implement both memory linearization hardware and the corresponding software. All PCIe graphics adapters that are compatible with the WDDM must support memory linearization in hardware and software.

AGP was dedicated to graphics adapters, and no other device class used it. PCIe is intended to be used by all device classes that previously used PCI. With AGP, a number of video drivers were directly programming the chipset, which gave rise to severe ill effects such as crashing and memory corruption in the graphics stack. Because PCIe will be used for all devices in the system, it is even more important that video drivers not program the chipset directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a PCIe video card work on Windows XP?

Yes. A PCIe video card will work on current operating systems, because PCIe is software compatible with PCI. PCIe hardware will work on operating systems that support PCI. For example, on current versions of Windows an x16 video card will be able to transfer data at the higher x16 rate of 4 Gbps.

Will the Windows Server 2003 DDK and the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) have any information and a PCIe graphics sample?

We do not plan to produce a sample that demonstrates the use of nonlocal video memory in a Windows XP video driver. There are no plans to have a video driver sample that demonstrates this functionality in the WDK, either. However, we encourage IHVs to work with us if they want to incorporate this functionality in their drivers.

Will PCIe graphics coexist with AGP?

There will be chipsets that support both AGP and X16 PCIe. Some motherboards will have both AGP and X16 PCIe slots using such a chipset.

Will multimonitor configurations work on PCIe graphics?

Multimonitor configurations of PCIe are expected to work just like PCI. Whether they do will depend on the motherboard manufacturers. For example, x16, x8, and x8 triple monitor configuration will necessitate the existence of one x16 and two x8 slots on the motherboard.

Does Microsoft have any plans for a PCIe graphics plugfest?

We do not have any dates yet. We will plan this depending on the feedback from the IHVs and original equipment manufacturers. Meanwhile, IHVs should attend the workshops and labs that are sponsored by the PCI-SIG.

Does Microsoft have the WHQL requirements for PCIe graphics?

WHQL does not yet have specific PCIe requirements from the display compatibility test (DCT) program yet.

What are the performance implications of using PCIe Graphics?

High-speed PCIe graphics will have better performance than AGP will. The PCIe graphics cards will use the x16 PCIe slot. This translates into a bandwidth of 4 Gbps. This is already a twofold increase over AGP 8X. In this case, "x1" means that the slot has one PCIe lane, which will give it a bandwidth of 264 Mbps. This is equal to the bandwidth provided by AGP 1X and twice that of PCI (132 Mbps).

Additionally, the AGP specification does not support "snooping." It implies that memory used by devices needs to be mapped uncached or write combined by the processor in order to prevent the processor from caching that memory, or else an expensive cache flush needs to be done between handoff of a surface between CPU and GPU. Thus, processor read access to that memory will be very slow.

PCIe will support snooping. It will now be possible to map such shared memory as cacheable and still be able to maintain coherency between the CPU and the GPU. Snooped transactions are slower than nonsnooped transactions, but since the CPU can read the shared memory at full speed and we do not need to flush any caches, the tradeoff might mean better performance in some scenarios.

AGP stability problems have resulted in instability in the graphics stack. How does Microsoft plan to address this problem in PCIe graphics?

We can address this problem only if we get full cooperation from the OEMs and IHVs. We ask you to send us your prototype hardware for testing. Misprogramming of the AGP registers by the video drivers has caused significant instability in the past. We would like to know about software shortcomings you come across, and we want to work closely with you to solve these problems without hacks in either your driver or in the Windows kernel infrastructure. The sooner we find out about these problems, the better. PCIe Plugfest is an excellent way to meet Windows PCIe developers and inform us about the problems and the progress you are making.

Is an n-lane PCIe slot compatible with a p-lane PCIe graphics card, where p > n? Where n > p?

You cannot plug an x16 graphics card into an x8 slot. You can however, if you wish, plug an x8 card PCIe card into an x16 slot. A p-lane PCIe card will work at some speed in an n-lane PCIe slot, where n > p. This is not true if n <>

When will PCIe systems be available on the different processors?

We anticipate that retail PCIe systems will be available by end of summer 2004. Motherboard manufacturers should be able to shed more light.

When will the graphics cards mentioned above be available?

Depending on the availability of motherboards, the retail market might have graphics cards from the major vendors by summer.

Streamyx Recover by 5 March

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) expects a complete recovery of its internet services by March 5.The service has been disrupted since Feb 18.

The disruption is due to a circuit fault on the Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN2) between Kuantan - Katong in Singapore and Shantou - Tanshui in Taiwan, which links Malaysia to the United States, TM said in a statement today.

Due to this, customers using the internet services may experience slow browsing while accessing content hosted in the US, said TM.

In addition, TM said customers using other IP services such as the Virtual Private Network (VPN) and other critical business applications linked to the US, might also experience some service degradation.

To alleviate the problem, some links had been rerouted to alternate routes to ease congestion, it explained.

During the restoration process, traffic to Northern America might experience minor degradation while traffic to other countries is not affected.

TM said it would make further announcements on the progress of the restoration works.

Customers can call TM at 100 and select "Internet Services" or e-mail help@tm.com.my for any internet related problems.

Registry Hack : Disable System Tray in Windows XP/ Vista

If you are the kind of people who have a lot of icons in the system tray, and not liking it, here's a solution. Its kind of a registry hack.

Navigate down the registry in the registry editor. (press windows logo + R, then type in regedit)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new 32-bit DWORD value in the right hand pane with these values:

Name: NoTrayItemsDisplay
Value: 1

You will have to logoff and back on for this to take effect. To remove the hack, just delete the key, or change the value to 0.

Note that disabling the system tray doesn't actually prevent system tray apps from running, it just hides them. You should still disable any applications that aren't needed.

Also note that the same registry key may exist in more than one location, so if you are trying to reverse this hack, you should search the registry for NoTrayItemsDisplay.

TM Streamyx Combo RM60/month give 2MB/s??

Recently, my father applied Streamyx (Malaysian ISP) combo pack for RM60/month (he said). For a quite moment, i felt very happy because at last my family's house have an internet connection. Soon after that i start to set the PPP settings and bla bla bla so that it's not required to dial everytime to use the net.

The interesting part is that i discovered this :

This is a screenshot of the Router settings i've open. It is 2043 kbps or 2MB/s and 512 kbps for download and upload!! It is supposed to be 368kbps download and 128kbps upload (if i'm not mistaken). Why is this happening? Is it that TM Streamyx does some sort of give a ways angpow for this coming Chinese New Years? lol. Okay... for the second time, i felt quite happy because of this suprising news.

Soon after that, i start to think whether it is true or not of the streamyx speed. I opened speedtest.net to calculate my internet connection speed. And this is the result..

LMAO..... i'm speechless now...

Show winamp now playing status in Yahoo Messenger (updated)

On previous post , i wrote a post on showing now playing song in winamp. Sadly the company now closing their website. But luckily this sunday morning, i found a way of showing now playing song on YM(yahoo messenger) , and i think it is even better than the previous one (Y!Amp).

It requires a plugin that have to be install in your computer. It works for YM 9,8, and also 7. I haven't tested it yet in YM 7. Just assuming it was right from this website. So, this how it works.

Just download the plugin below. Then install. Done! You can configure the plugin in winamp > option > preference > plugin > general purpose

Imeem.com is a site that offers users to upload songs, make playlists, and embed them on web pages for free with a Flash player. Recently I asked my friend on how to increase torrent download speed. He told me to use a software called Peer Guardian. I asked him for more detail, but he refused. Then after doing some experiments and Googlypedia research, i finally agreed with him. This is a screenshot of my torrent download.

Dangers of Sharing Folders on the Network

Do you know how danger it is to share folders in the network? Event though it is good and very useful, there are still some trouble that we could not realize in the back of our head. I would like to list some of the danger that could happen:

Your computer will be working slow if someone using your shared folders, such as copying big file from your computer to theirs.
Your computer is exposed to viruses and such malicious programs that came from users of your shared folders or we can say people in the network.
This is the most troublesome. If there existed bad guys in your network, these people could possibly delete your most important file in your computer. More trouble if those morons deleted your windows file. Just imagine the hazard!

So today, I would like to write about the danger for the 'kindness' of sharing folders in the network. If you didn’t know, sharing a folder on the Network is VERY easy. Just right click any folder or even your drive, select “Sharing and Security” and all it takes to share is by checking the “Share this folder on the network” checkbox. That leaves the folder open for everyone to access. Checking another box “Allow network users to change my files” lets anyone on the network to create and delete files in the shared folder.

Most common mistake that a lot of people make after sharing the folder to the network is forgotten to unshare it. Unchecking the checkboxes will unshare the folder. If you want to know what folders are being shared by you, use Computer Management to show you all your shared folders. Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management and expand System Tools > Shared Folders > Shares.

The ADMIN$, C$, and IPC$ is shared by default. You do not need to worry about that. Here are a few steps you can take to protect yourself from intruders in getting in your shared folders.
1. Unshare the shared folder after you’re done sharing the file to another person.
2. Use a money dollar sign $ at the end of the Share name to hide shared folders from being displayed publicly.

3. Use NetShare Monitor notify you when someone is accessing your shared folders.
4. Use a “router” instead of direct connect to the Internet as it gives you a layer of protection against intruders. Works only at Home.
5. Do not use Simple File Sharing. Go to Control Panel -> Folder Options -> click the View tab, and uncheck “Use simple file sharing”.

6. Finally, a decent firewall can protect you from intruder.

Now I’ll show you how easy and fast it is for an intruder to scan for open shared folders in network or Internet. There are many types of security scanners but I am going to use a simple, small and fast tool called “Angry IP Scanner” to scan hundreds and thousands of computers for shared folders.

I downloaded Angry IP Scanner 2.21 (since it is stable. the latest version is 3.0 beta. also available for linux and mac OS! +link+) and also the Windows Shares plugin. I ran a test scan on a range of IP addresses and found a few victims that has some folders being shared.

I simply use the Windows method of access another computer \\IP or \\HOSTNAME. In this case, I enter \\218.208.224.16 in Windows RUN and hit the OK button.

Within seconds, a window box appears displaying the shared folders. I can now access the victim shared My Documents folder and “maybe” even have the rights to change, add or delete files.

Hack Firefox for Faster Browsing

Ok, firefox is my favourite browser after all. Using a few tweaks here and there, we can make FireFox considerably faster, enable advanced tab options, make newer versions compatible with older extentions, run directly from a flash disk, and so much more. Today i would like to share a simple trick that you can do to make your firefox even faster. For those who are still using internet explorer, you should start using firefox and feel the different.

No need to be a hacker, or a computer freek. Just follow the steps and you should experience up to 40% faster for page transfers.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 2 ⅔ minutes

Here's how:
1. Open Firefox. In the address bar type about:config

2. Find browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs

3. Double click on it. So value = true
Note : if browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs is not showing, simply right click anywhere in the screen > new> string. Then, paste browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs . In the value column, type true.

4. Find network.http.pipelining

5. Double click on it. So value = true

6. Find network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

7. Double click on it. And change it from 4 to 100

8. No need to save this file. Simply close and restart Firefox. (close and open it again)

Monitor Sharing Files That Being Accessed in Home/Office Network

'Sharing Folders' is commonly used by people whom contracted to office, college or home network. Sharing is good. Like one of my colleague said, sharing is caring. However, there still be hazard when there's corrupted person attempted in the network. These people could cause a lot of trouble when they access your shared folder and delete your 2 month done thesis.

By default, you can easily know who is accessing your Shared Folder from the Computer Management. To do this, just right click on My Computer > Manage. Expand System Tools > Shared Folders. From there you can see what folders are shared, who is connected to your computer and what files are currently open by the person who is accessing your computer.

Hold on.. It's not a good news yet! There is still problems. Computer Management doesn’t notify you when someone is accessing your shared folders. It also doesn’t auto refresh to see the sessions and open files. Now is the good news! lol. Today I found this free utility that is able to monitor your shared folders and notify you when someone access your shared folders.

NetShareMonitor is the application to watch your shared files from the intruders and thereby protecting your shares from unauthorized access. As soon as remote user connects to your machine, NetShareMonitor detects it and displays information about that session. The session information includes remote host address, remote user name, list of accessed files and time of connection. Entire details pertaining to each session will be logged to file for future analysis.

Now you no longer have to worry about your shared files being accessed by unknown persons on the network. You can make NetShareMonitor to keep eye on your shares while you get down to work. It will alert you on any file access and you can always check the log files for past sessions in case you have missed the alert.

The setting is simple. No need for installation. Just minimize it for it to work.

USB Device not detect/automount on Ubuntu

I had a problem of mounting my USB SD card reader. When i insert my USB card reader, nothing happened. After doing some Google discovery, finally i got my card reader work! Perhaps u should try if u had the same problem like me.

1. First, open the terminal. Then type the following code :

dmesg | tail

Note 2.1 : Replace yourusername with your actual user name)
i.e :
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /home/yogatta/Public

Note 2.2 : my output is sdb1, so if your output is sda1, type in sda1

This is the simplest way to mount your disk. Be aware that you won't be able to write to this disk unless you are operating with root permissions. You can start an instance of nautilus from the command line operating with root permissions by:

sudo nautilus

In that instance of nautilus, you'll be able to write to this directory.

3. So, to open your mounted drive, when you open the nautilus, go to file system > home > yourusername > Public

You should see your mounted drive there.

When done, to unmount the device (for safe removal) you can do:

sudo umount /home/yourusername/Public

This will let you at least get access to your devices again.

Hide Partition Icon on Ubuntu Desktop

Fresh installation from Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Cd shows icons for all partitions on your desktop. As for me, i would like to see my desktop clean and free from icons. Changing a value in the GNOME Configuration Editor will stop partitions from being displayed on your desktop.

Press Alt + F2 to bring up the Run Application dialog. Type gconf-editor and click Run.

In the left pane of the window, browse to apps > nautilus > desktop.

Uncheck the volumes_visible option and the partitions on your desktop will disappear.

If you want to keep shortcuts to some partitions but not others, just do the following directions, and then you can create your own launchers for the partitions you want.

1. Right click on the desktop and click Create Launcher.

2. In the Type drop down box, select location.

3. Give the launcher a name and the location you want to link to. You can find the hard drive icon in usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/devices/ if you want to use it. The resulting launcher will act just like the ones that you removed earlier in this post.

How to Send File In Proxy Limited Network/ IM File Transfer Blocked

One of the basic credit of Instant Messaging is file transfer. Instant Messaging would be very useful when we need to send documents to our friends, clients, or anybody. When using IM in a limited internet access that only allow web surfing, and even streaming website also prohibited, file transfer would be impossible. Creating Bootable CD Windows XP Using Nero Burning ROM **(fixed)

Here's a very useful tip to create bootable CD for Windows XP.
Things that you need:

A copy of original Windows XP CD/DVD
CD/DVD burner
Nero Burning ROM software

1) First step is, download this file >> bootfile.zip
2) Extract this file into C:\Boot (create one if not exist)
3) Start Nero Burning ROM
4) Select File >> New from the menu
5) Select CD-ROM (Boot)
6) Select Image file from Source of boot image data. (C:\Boot). Press the Browse button
7) Check Enable expert settings (for advanced users only!).
8) Set Kind of emulation: to No Emulation.
9) Set Load segment of sectors (hex!): 0000.
10) Set Number of loaded sectors: 4.

11) Click on the ISO tab.
12) Set Data mode: Mode 1
13) Set File system to ISO 9660 + Juliet
14) Set File name length (ISO) : Max. of 31 chars (ISO Level 2).
15) Set Character Set (ISO) : ISO 9660 (standard ISO CD-ROM)
16) Check all Relax ISO Restrictions.

17) Click on the Label tab
18) Click on Manual button
19) Click on More Labels

20) Enter the detail below inside the ISO 9660 and Joliet section.

21) Click the Ok button
22) Click the Burn tab.
23) Check Write.
24) Check Finalize CD (No further writing possible!).
25) Set Write Method to Disc-at-once.
26) Click the New button.

27) Locate the folder containing all the Windows XP file
28) Select everything in the folder and drag it to the ISO compilation panel.
Note: Some files are not show in the following image.
29) Click the Burns the current compilation button.

30) Click the Boot tab.
31) Verify the settings. Correct if needed.
32) Click the Burn button.

33) Wait for the disk to finish
34) Click Ok
35) Click Done

Gaming is going through a major revolution and the graphics keep getting better with every new game that is released. Unless you have a top of the line computer some of these games will not run on your computer. Today i found a website called System Requirements Lab.

System Requirements Lab uses an online script to check your computer to see if it meets or exceeds the minimum requirements of a game. Just choose a game and with a single hit ,“Can you run it?” button, it will scan your system. It may take some time. Just wait for it to finish.

In my opinion, checking your system compatibility is very important. First, if you obsessed of a game, and might need a powerful graphic card, you can choose which graphic card you have to buy that suits the game. You can save money by not buying unnecessary and expensive graphic card. Second, you can save money by not buying cd/dvd game that unfortunately not compatible with your computer. Hence, do a system check now!

How to increase torrent download speed

Help! BitTorrent is slow… This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get about BitTorrent. Unfortunately there’s not some kind of magic trick that makes your torrents go through the roof. But you could take some simple steps to optimize your speeds.

1. Cap your upload (most important)

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.

e.g: In my situation, i limit my upload speed to 28 kB/s from my upload speed that is 35kB/s

Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.

2. Hack the max TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok. (more on this).

If you're n Windows Vista, you probably dont have to hack the TCP connection. In Bitcomet, just manually set up the TCP/IP connection to any value that you want.Ive done this and it works great.

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port and d Port Forward.

By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall

It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

How to Set Vista Boot First in Dual Booting with Ubuntu/Linux

If you're on Windows Vista dual boot with Ubuntu/Linux, and you want to set Vista to boot first, all you have to do is configure the Grub and edit the boot menu. Open up the Terminal (Application>accesories>terminal) and type in:

sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst_bak

and enter your root password when asked - this makes a backup of the GRUB menu file just in case things go wrong.

Next, type in:

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

This opens up the boot menu as a text file in gedit.

There are loads of options you can change, but only a couple that you’re likely to be interested in. The default boot entry is defined by the “default” value.

The default value is 0, which means that the first entry in the list (which is Ubuntu) always gets loaded.

If you want to make it so that Windows Vista loads by default, change the value to 4, as Vista is the fifth item in the list (the numbering system starts at 0 and "Other operating systems" also counts as a line).

The other way to load Windows Vista by default is to change the value for “default” from a numerical value to “saved”. Then, GRUB will load whichever boot entry has been marked with “savedefault”.

If you scroll down the list and have a look at the entries, you’ll notice that both the main Ubuntu entry and Windows Vista have been marked with “savedefault”. Remove the value for Ubuntu and Windows Vista will launch by default.

It's also worthwhile changing the description of the Vista entry from "Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)" to just "Windows Vista".

You can also increase the boot menu timeout – just change the value for “timeout”. You can also hide the GRUB boot menu by removing the hash in front of “hiddenmenu”. Save and exit gedit to keep any changes.

If instead of GRUB you want Vista's bootloader to be in charge, load up the Vista installation and install EasyBCD. Go to “Manage Bootloader”, then “Reinstall the Vista Bootloader”, an GRUB is overwritten. You can then configure the Vista bootloader to add Linux to the boot menu.

Removing GRUB for Vista

Recently i used dual- booting OS, Fedora 7 and Windows Vista. For some reason, i manage to remove F7 and leave the Vista alone. I formatted the partition used for F7 and leave it empty. As the effect, when i restarted the computer, a command line appear ; GRUB>
Vista cannot load. After some research and tries, i finally discover the perfect solution for this problem.

No Video Signal to Monitor

If you are having trouble booting the system and getting a screen try the
following multi-step procedure. Power off your system first before
completing any of the following tips. Skip the items you may have already
tried.

Check CMOS clear jumper JP1 (JBAT1 on some systems). Set for CLEAR for 5
seconds, then move back.
Check CPU host clock jumpers (if any) are properly set. Note: does not
control memory bus.
Check your power supply. The power should not be too big nor too small.
Unplug all data cables for IDE and FDD from the motherboard.
Unplug all power supply cables attaching to your IDE and FDD drives.
Remove all cards and devices EXCEPT for video, RAM, CPU, CPU heatsink/FAN.
Move memory into a different bank, if available.
Unplug the CPU and reattach.
Ensure your CPU heatsink/FAN is attached properly to the CPU.
If you use a variable RPM fan ensure its set for full speed.
Retest.
If 1-11 do not help power off and test the motherboard outside the computer case to eliminate a case/motherboard power short. Test on a non-conductive surface. Do not test on an anti-static bag!
Retest. If the board now works check for case problems. If the system
still is not working continue...
You may have a possible hardware problem. Any device in the system may
be a possible culprit. Use process of elimination to determine the cause.
Swap out as many components as possible starting with RAM, CPU, POWER
SUPPLY, VIDEO CARD (if present) and/or MOTHERBOARD.

Tips for Securing your Wireless Network

Some laptops has a nice "Connect to Wireless Network" button right on top. The laptop is a nice warm spot, so our cats like to sleep on top of the keyboard. One of the cats stepped on that button. The computer just went out and connected to the wireless network of somebody else in the apartment building. If you haven't done anything to protect your wireless network, it's that easy for anybody, even a cat, to connect to the Internet through your network. It might just be your neighbor borrowing your connection, but hackers and spammers will also use these open wireless connections.

So you really should do a few things to protect your wireless network from getting borrowed. (You may need to look around in the configuration or manuals for your router to find just where to set each of these things....)

With simple, cheap tools like these, anyone could find your wireless network unless you do some of the steps below.

To Protect from a Cat:

When setting up your router, change the SSID. SSID is some abbreviation that really is the name of your wireless network. (And while you're at it, change the password for the router too. It takes just seconds to find the default passwords for a whole list of different equipment.)

Then in the router setup, set so it will not "Broadcast SSID". Otherwise changing in step 1 is worthless since it will just be yelling out the changed name.

You will need to type in the SSID when setting up your computers to connect to the wireless network. But that should protect you from our feline friends. And that will stop most people too. Somebody with the right tools will still be able to listen and get your network's name.

To Protect from a Person:

Do all the Cat steps first!

To protect from all but the most serious people, you should turn on wireless security. WEP 40-bit security if nothing else, but 128-bit is much better. And the newer WPA is even better.
Wireless security (especially the 40 bit WEP sort) just isn't that strong. Even doing all these steps doesn't mean you are perfectly secure. If somebody has the time and equipment, they'll eventually be able to crack it. But unless you are being specifically targeted, this makes you pretty safe. Likely there's somebody down the street or down the hall who hasn't done these things. Anybody driving around looking for an insecure network will just find theirs and not yours.
